Meringue Bread Pudding

3 eggs, separated
2 cups milk
½ cup sugar
1 cup bread cubes
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup stewed apples or orange marmalade

Beat yolks of eggs and 1 white, add sugar and vanilla, add milk, and stir until sugar is dissolved. Place bread cubes in baking dish. Pour custard over the bread and bake in a moderately slow oven, 325 degrees until set, or at 375 degrees if set in pan of hot water. Cover with stewed apples, marmalade or any preserve or jelly. Beat remaining 2 whites frothy, beat in 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar, and a few drops of vanilla, beat stiff. Spread meringue over the apples and place in oven until a delicate brown. Serve hot with or without cream.
