Black Midnight Cake

2/3 cup soft shortening
¼ tsp. baking powder
1 2/3 cups sugar
1 ½ tsp. soda
3 eggs
1 tsp. salt
2 cups flour (sifted)
1 1/3 cups water
2/3 cup cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs for 5 minutes on high speed. Sift flour, cocoa, baking powder, soda, and salt in a separate bowl and set aside. Mix water and vanilla together in a small bowl. Add alternately the dry ingredients and wet ingredients to the creamed mixture. Bake 35 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Frost with chocolate butter frosting below.

Chocolate Butter Frosting

1/3 cup soft butter
¼ cup cocoa
3 cups confectioners‟ sugar
1 ½ tsp. vanilla
3 Tbsp. cream
Dash of salt

Cream butter until soft. Add all other ingredients. Beat on high speed until frosting is of spreading consistency.
